Welcome to our new website!
It’s estimated that as many as 25 million people throughout North America experience some form of incontinence, which is described as accidental or involuntary urination. There are varying degrees of incontinence – from minor to severe – and, generally speaking, those that experience it are able to go about living a perfectly normal lifestyle by simply taking measures to manage their symptoms.
While incontinence underwear, absorbent pads and medication are some ways that people go about managing incontinence issues, other lifestyle adjustments can also be enacted to minimize symptoms. Lifestyle adjustments such as watching what you eat, as some foods and drinks are better for managing your symptoms than others.
Before we get into healthy food that isn’t just good for you, but good for your incontinence symptoms, it’s time first to take a look at foods to stay away from. Food and drink such as tomatoes, coffee, tea, chocolate, oranges, limes and alcohol can actually worsen incontinence symptoms, as they’re all types of food and drinks that can increase bladder pressure and bring on a sudden urge to go.
So what kind of diet modification can you make to actually help your incontinence symptoms?
Doctors recommend simplifying your diet and eating foods that are high in fiber. Things like grains, non-citrus fruits and vegetables are all ideal for helping such issues. And that brings us to our incontinence recipe of the month – barbecue turkey guacamole burgers.
Here’s a look at the recipe and why it’s good for your incontinence symptoms:
In a medium bowl, combine all ingredients, then:
Combine ingredients in small bowl and serve atop turkey burgers.
Turkey is a much leaner, healthier choice of meat than ground beef and it actually cooks up great on the grill and is perfect for serving during the summer months. And guacamole is one of the healthiest foods out there that you can consume. It contains Vitamins A, C and E, has 30 percent more potassium than a banana and is full of antitoxins.
Simply put, barbecued turkey guacamole burgers are delicious and fun to make in the warm weather months when you’re outdoors grilling. But they’re also extremely healthy and can do wonders for any incontinence issues that you face. We’d suggest, however, dining on them with cranberry juice or water (good incontinence drinks), rather than the tempting bottle of beer, as alcohol often contributes to incontinence symptoms.
So while hamburgers and hot dogs might seem like the summertime staple when you’re firing up the grill in the backyard, give turkey a try next time – and follow the recipe above to really prepare a meal that isn’t just delicious, but healthy – both for your body and for your incontinence symptoms.
