Tips to Avoid Running to the Bathroom During a Movie

It’s date night with your spouse, and you’re looking forward to taking in the movie that critics are buzzing about at your local multiplex. There’s only one problem – you experience incontinence and are concerned that you’re going to be leaving the theater multiple times throughout the flick’s two-hour run time to go “take care of business.” And who knows what pivotal plot points you could be missing during those precious moments when you’re “going,” not to mention how annoyed you’ll be by repeat bathroom visits.

The good news is that there’s a number of things that you can do to make sure that you’re not making trips to the bathroom during the movie on date night, ranging from the simple to the more complex. Here’s a look:

How to “Hold it” Through a Movie

  • The basics: You should already have the basics nailed before you even take your seats in the movie theater – don’t drink anything immediately before the movie, and always use the restroom prior to taking your seat. Like we said, these are the basics.
  • Sitting tips: A lot of holding it in has to do with how you’re positioned. For example, there are ways to sit and watch a movie that place less pressure on the pelvic floor muscles, which help control urinary function. So how should you sit? Upright, yet relaxed. Don’t slouch, as that puts pressure on the abdominal area.
  • Don’t think about it: Simply put, engross yourself in the movie you’re watching – don’t let your mind wander so that you’re constantly thinking about using the bathroom. Thinking about it can only make it worse.
  • Train your bladder: This isn’t something that you necessarily do in the movie theater, but in the days, weeks, and even months leading up to it. Your bladder re-training technique should involve creating a diary that notes how often you’re using the bathroom. Then, when the urge to urinate comes, you simply work to delay urination to “train” your bladder. Start small at first, adding just minutes to the time. As you improve, however, you should continue to tack many more minutes onto your delay time. To accelerate the re-training process, you can also perform Kegel exercises to help strengthen the pelvic floor muscles. Just be patient with bladder re-training – it can take anywhere from 6 to 12 weeks to become truly effective.
