3 More Celebrities with Incontinence

November 28, 2014

Incontinence can happen to anyone, and many ordinary people can find it inspiring to learn how celebrities are owning and treating their incontinence. After all, one in three people can experience incontinence at some point in their lives. We have done a roundup of celebrities with incontinence before, and it was a very popular blog post. So we’re following up with another list of celebrities who have experienced or are still experiencing urinary incontinence. Since many men and women remain quiet about their bladder leakage from a combination of fear, shame, or lack of knowledge, these celebrities perform an important function by owning their incontinence in public, and proving that you don’t need to stay sidelined if you have bladder leakage.

Whoopi Goldberg

Not only is Whoopi Goldberg a spokesperson for incontinence products, she also has personal experience with urinary incontinence. Whoopi decided to speak out about incontinence to help educate women that bladder leakage is something that can happen to women of all ages, and that there are things you can do about it. Light bladder leakage, or as Whoopi calls it “the spritz,” can occur when you sneeze, when you cough, or when you do physical activity.

Marie Osmond

During a performance with her brother on cruise ships, Marie Osmond suffered from stress incontinence while performing on the stage. Members of the audience saw her let out a stream of urine as she laughed from an audience member’s question. At the time, she reportedly said, “I just peed my pants!” Then she wiped up the puddle of urine. Stress incontinence is something that can happen to anyone, but menopause and childbirth are two of the common triggers.

Gerard Depardieu

The French actor made headlines in 2011 when he urinated on an airplane after being told by airplane staff that he would not be able to use the bathroom until the plane was in the air. At the time, observers said that Depardieu became angry and that he urinated on the plane’s floor, leading to a two-hour delay as staff cleaned the mess. A friend who was traveling with Depardieu corrected the initial reports, stating that Depardieu urinated into an empty water bottle, but that the bottle overflowed. Depardieu has since blamed a prostate problem, benign prostate hyperplasia (BPH) for his incontinence. BPH causes the prostate to grow until it presses on the bladder wall. This causes more frequent urination and bladder leakage, among other symptoms.

These celebrities help to illustrate the diversity of incontinence symptoms and causes, and their stories can be inspiring to incontinence sufferers of all ages. Even if you feel alone sometimes, you aren’t. Don’t let incontinence slow you down.
